Flights 2 South Africa & Cheap Tickets

March 3rd, 2009 No comments

As a professional in the Travel Industry I do monitor flight rates the whole time… at the moment flying to South Africa has become much cheaper during the low season.

e.g. British Airways – Amsterdam via London to Jo’burg: 570 Euro inclusive taxes.
Flying from Frankfurt can also safe you a lot of cash, e.g. Emirates via Dubai to Jo’burg: 615 Euro inclusive taxes in September.

However the high season for European tourism, July and August seems to be much more expensive this year. I presume the airlines compensate their cheap tickets during those summer Months?  Rates around the 900 to 1100 Euro for return trip to Jo’burg are common in August.

Gemsbok Bull courtship circling

February 3rd, 2009 No comments

gemsbok-bullKgalagadi Transfrontier Park (South Africa side) Gemsbok “courtship circling”, the female gemsbok (not at the picture) is moving away from the bull. Very interersting sighting as most of the time these antilopes are just feeding, resting under a tree or walking through the bush. The bull is trying to move behind the female to sniff her backside. The erected tail (see picture) and the foreleg lifting of the bull (not at this picture) are clear signs his is ready to mount the female.  The bull did finally mount the female but she rejected him by moving away.

Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park

Just back from the recce trip to the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park in South Africa, this area is part of the larger Transfrontier Park with Botswana. Kalahari sand, red dunes and arid desert vegetation. We’ve been exploring the 4×4 tracks and stayed at several of the (new) wilderness camps. More pictures + info on this safari will be published soon!

Upington Land Rover

January 6th, 2009 No comments

In SA now @ the Upington Land Rover garage, no breakdown but just an aircon service for the Td5! It’s 45 degrees max. so some better cooling is most welcome. Just left Augrabies Falls and now on the way to the Kgalagadi Transfrontier National Park. Freshing up my knowledge as the last visit to the National Parks dates back to 1999! Expect not much to be changed except the increase in wilderness and rest camps (and traffic). Back in the nineties (and the Kalahari Gemsbok years) the only 3 camps were Twee Rivieren, Nossob and Mata Mata. First night will be camping and from there on we will stay at several wilderness  camps.

Mapungubwe

Mapungubwe National Park, South Africa. A lot of  South Africans do (unfortunately) not know their own Mapungubwe National Park. Being relatively new this National Park at the Botswana / Zimbabwe border is worth visiting. It’s both a World Heritage Site (read more at the SANPARKS website) and a good place to watch Elephants at close range! This family decided to supply us with the bum shot, a popular wildlife pose in general!
